It was good to see our nearly new neighbourhood sergeant getting his boots dirty, I refer to the fact that he took the time to come onto the hood field rather than standing on the side-lines. What a shame people did not take the time to chat with him before telling him he should leave, they might have heard from the horse’s mouth so to speak that the rumour that the police are trying to put an end to the Hood is ill founded and the police are only there to provide a level of safe crowd control. The sergeant appeared to have done some research and have learnt from the failures of some of his predecessors, he was positive about the future of policing the Hood as a community event.
As it happened the Police Commissioner Mr.Grove was with the sergeant and unlike so many politicians was not spending his time grinning for the cameras but quietly observing and appeared impressed at the event and the community spirit involved.
I for one hope we see the police getting more involved in local events rather than whizzing around in their cars with little or no contact with the public who they serve and police with our consent.
